Term 2 Sabbatical- Aviation Science

This sabbatical was a great one as we got to apply science concepts into gaming. We used the science concepts about flying to play with virtual planes on the Microsoft Flight Simulator and Pacific Fighter, we also got to fly an F16 fighter jet and engage in dogfights using the science concepts we learnt in the sabbatical, which the sabbatical instructor, Mr Yeo, made it a point to teach us before letting us off to play with the flight simulator. In the theory class before we went to practicals, we got to learn the measurements in aviation, where we learnt the length of the wing span, plane body etc, the area over which the pilot is allowed to perform a flight, the volume of fuel he needs to carry to complete a journey, the time needed to fly from a point to another point and the temperature of he outside air at each height the aircraft is flying to. We had to apply our science knowledge on measurements here. We also learnt about rate, speed and density which are applied in the concept of flying, we learnt about force, lift and thrust, conversion of energy in an aircraft while it is flying, reading charts and graphs to understand the flight plan of an aircraft, particulate model of matter in motors, which I was surprised to find out that this was similar to the Kinetic Particle Theory, which I had learnt. We also learnt about the human circulatory system and how does it react to a rise in altitude, electricity and lastly abou the human ear and it's sound and balancing act when the plane rises into the air.
During the advanced course, I learnt about the aerodynamics of a plane and wing-profiles of an F16, we also learnt about the different parts of a plane motor and also learnt about the weapons in a F16 and their radar guidance systems and the infra red seeker missile, lastly, we learnt about electronic warfare in a F16 and the fun thing was that we got to apply all these knowledge into gaming. We also took part in an air race, which we had to apply my IH map-reading skills here, and we took part in dogfights with our peers and we had to use our knowledge learnt in theory classes to enjoy te entire gaming process fully.
This sabbatical was a very meaningful one as it not only enabled me to learn about aviation science, but also applied such knowledge in hands-on activities like gaming.
